103 ship day 02, 2018-10-31 (no photo)

our progress between 9h and 15h…

This night I had some nightmares (mostly about missing ships, ferries or trains) but all in all I slept deep for a while and finally woke up at 5:40.
Today, I worked with Magix Video and started with easier clips. So, I learned to use some basic functions and some of them are similar fast to use like in movie maker and some are at least more precise and by that in the end also fast enough.
Still, I lost much time by looking up functions in the handbook and I could not find the same names, or it simply didn’t work (for me).
But I could finish more than before with movie maker with all those problems although some videos obviously will show that I am beginner…
I wonder if permanently feeling weak and tired is a matter of age or what else could be the reason. I sleep more during the night than during most of the trip and had a rest in the afternoon.
I do my knee bending etc workout still every hour and hope to feel and to become better during these days. Today, I was at the gym, using the elipter for 40min.
The captain told me that we go slow, because it is no use to arrive before 9th. The cargo will not be ready earlier. Tomorrow, we have the first time-change, three more are to come.
I live from breakfast to lunch and from lunch to dinner, these are the highlights and the cornerstones in the course of the day. The hours are structured by my “training”, the rest is mostly video editing, and a little reading. There is a portfolio with instructions and information about the ship and I have some things to read on the PC.
My goal is to get the video stuff done to feel better and free…
And another goal could be to enjoy my spare time without becoming weaker every day and without bad conscience. Don’t know why those basic things are so hard for me.

102 Ship day 01, 30.10.18

Slept well, but first time awake at 3:30, getting up at 5:30.
Want to achieve some bodily goals, mostly regarding mobility for the “Asian squat” (I tend to fall back, because lack of flexibility in my lower legs) and I would like to be able to do “pistol squats” (=single leg squats). For that, maybe 10 days is not enough.
And I want to get the video cutting up-to-date. This mainly depends on the movie maker, if I must cope with crashes all the time, I lose too much time.
At 7, breakfast starts. I got a Muesli for the first time since Bulgaria, ? it I was happy to see the remaining vegetables of dinner in the omelette. Also, the fish from yesterday evening was offered again in another form. Maybe this is the cook’s personal philosophy or the company’s, or it just happened once – I will see.
After breakfast, I got a call to come down to the office. The security officer explained me some rules and I had to fill in a form, normally a test sheet for new members of the crew.
I now should know the general alarm signal ( . . . . . . . ____), the fire alarm signal (___ ___) and the abandon ship signal (. ___ : ___), I should know what to do in case of fire alarm or man over board alarm (“as per master’s order”), I should find the fire extinguishers, alarm signal, life boats,

life jackets or immersion suit and I learned how to take that on and off. (hard to do alone!)

Then, he showed me around on a-deck, that is under the containers. We went to the nose of the ship, I saw the chain of the anchor, each chain link more than half a meter. I could look through a window down to the engine and feel the heavy storm of the exhaust.
Maybe, I can repeat that tour to take some pictures.
Next was a call to the bridge to show my documents and forms and to hand out my passport and vaccination certificate.
I could get a short insight into their work.

Then I continued my own editing work that sometimes was without problems for a while and then again one crash came after the other.
Before lunch, I made a “Results” workout with 4x (100 Jumping jacks +15 Flatout Burpees+15 Pike push-ups + 20 Jump squats + 60 low plank + 60 high planks) (3rd and 4th time only 10 Pike push-ups and 45’’ planks).
It was exhausting and made me a bit sad, because it showed me how much fitness I have lost during a bike trip that at the same time must have improved my fitness level. But I remember how hard it was when I started to use this app.
I had lunch with the crew and a little small talk.
They had not had good information what was going on with me yesterday and it was good to have an opportunity to explain that I could not have done anything to be on board faster.
Working with moviemaker was very annoying. Sometimes, clips in the movie were moved to trash while I was working, sometimes the shortcut for cutting crashes the program down or deletes parts, I have to restart multiple times and so on. Maybe it is faster to get used to a more complex program than to try to handle those problems?
Maybe in some days!
Today I had to learn how to use it. Some functions are nearly as fast as movie maker, others tedious. Inserting other clips is such an example. They go to the end of the track and it is laborious to get it on the right place.
By mistake, in the end I had several copies of some clips and then everything was in a mess. I had to give up without having completed one single day.
The problem is that I have two kinds of clips most of the time, from the camera those selfie movies and from gopro the street clips. And the time setting is not the same. So, I better should watch all the clips before, to set up the correct sequence before starting editing.
Tomorrow I will try that with the clips of another day.
I am glad that in Iran I had made less selfie videos in the course of the time, and hope that I will be faster in the next days…

every day, I made a screenshot of the progress

two of the last Islands before being surrounded by much water for some days

I promise – not too many sun sets and cloud formations will follow!

…and also pics like that – containers and ship details 🙂 But this was my environment and I liked it!

101 from Dubai 29.10.2018

Gray had another early morning dragon boat training session and when I got up at 6:30, he already was back! He then did some gardening and then we had to say good bye (if CMA CGM Columba really goes today and if I really will be on board of it).

only garden, no Gray anymore 🙁

I went for a last swim (if CMA CGM Columba really goes today and if I really will be on board of it). At the beach I had been yesterday, the guard told me that I cannot go for a swim because of the waves but I could go to the next beach, it is open. The waves weren’t high at all but more than yesterday and at the next beach, just 500m away, it indeed was better.

At the beach I had been yesterday, the guard told me that I cannot go for a swim because of the waves but I could go to the next beach, it is open. The waves weren’t high at all but more than yesterday and at the next beach, just 500m away, it indeed was better.
At 9a.m., I should get a message about the next steps of boarding and I wait for that and wonder if CMA CGM Columba really goes today and if I really will be on board of it.
It came also to Gray who forwarded it to me. It said that I would be picked up at 15:00. I got two additional emails telling about immigration fee and then that I would be charged 81$, and should it pay to Mr. Omair, so I wasn’t sure what was meant by that, Immigration fee or something else.
Elaine made another delicious meal for lunch or as snack and near to 3a.m., Phil went me to the nearby mosque where normally also shops and a barber are. Those shops are meant to support the community-run mosques. Phil told me that by law every 500m should be a mosque.
We got rolled bread with lenses and chickpeas for 3dirham (less than a €) each. And then Mr. Omair appeared, we packed the bike and the bags in his car and went off.

at least there is this good bye photo with Elaine and Phil!

At 16:15 we arrived at the port. We first had to go to the emigration center in the “dp-world” We waited for a while, then Mr. Omair went to do something else. Another agent waited with me, then went out with me to his car, and when Mr. Omair came back, the talked, exchanged papers, made phone calls and then we went back to the office. I then sat there again alone, then the leaving captain came, after 2,5 months, he could go home to Romania for as long. Meanwhile, it was 17:00, between 19-20:00 the ship should leave, loading was almost finished. At 17:30, one officer, an especially cool one, who behaved all the time as everyone/-thing were part of a TV-thriller and he would be the police hero who only between some street actions had to come to office, waved with my passport and asked how I had arrived in Dubai. Then he and two colleagues starred at the PC screen with similar expressions like captain Kirk when a very big dangerous object appeared on crash course. And at 18:00 the problem was explained: my passport was not in the system, the guys in Shajar seemed to have worked bad.
The two agents became nervous (me too as you can guess), running out the office and making phone calls and writing messages on 3 different phones (no problem, they have four ears).

Mr. Omair explained to me that the ship would leave without me if things are not finished before the load is on board. I saw no big chance when I thought back to those less motivated officers in Sharjar who now should be of help and started to think about the consequences and some choices for a plan B.
At 18:30 we ran back to the office. Mr. Omair should his phone to the cool guy. He went to another PC in the backoffice, Mr. Omair made a thumbs up to me. Mr. Cool showed that he is empowered to work even slower but because of some good mood or because of friendship to Mr. Omair, he only was so slow as his cool attitude made necessary. He came back with 3 big stamps. He just needed one, but it looked more dramatic. With gestures like a poker master he flipped my passport over the desk. We were about to run our, but another officer stopped Mr. Omair. Maybe all that had made him, let’s call him babyface, jealous and he found something to show his own importance, too. Mr. Omair had to put down his name card, something was wrong with the cover, because he made a warning gesture to Mr. Omair who showed as many signs of slavishness as the lack of time allowed and the situation still required.
We rushed to the car, the big harbour seemed endless (or Mr. Omair drove some rounds extra to make it more dramatic?), then we arrived at the security check office. For my weak nerves, the officer needed too much time with checking the passport, I feared the worst, but then he gave it back, my bags were x-rayed, and we ran to a waiting bus. So, we drove though skyscraping countainers and enormous cranes to a very big ship, the Columba. I had no time to look at it, two sailors were waiting to help me bring my bike and my luggage up a long and steep ladder/stairway-mixture. Mr. Omair got those 81$ that apparently were meant for his taxi service, but after all that stress I was ok with that price.

A sailor fast showed me the cabin (an apartment!) and the dining room (dining was over, but they had left my food, mushroom soup, fish with polenta and salad).

I didn’t feel the ship leaving, I only saw it when I was back in my room.
I cannot believe it, I am on board!!

100 swim in Dubai 28.10.2018

Finally, after 3 days in Dubai, I went to the beach for a swim. I really can’t tell if I like or dislike swimming, but I know that it is kind of healthy and there are not too many as good opportunities to do it.

I really should go into that water, right?

When I should describe ideal conditions for swimming, it would be warm but not hot, no direct sun, no or only little wind, a clean and nearly empty beach and clear and nearly empty, well-tempered and quiet water. And in this morning, all of that came together, so I swam for 40 or 50min, walked to and fro the beach to get dry and rode back home.

makes “Vienna” a veterinary clinic more trustworthy or more fancy?

After getting my blog up to date, I had started to cut videos, the last done before was day 043. But something is wrong with moviemaker. ☹ Sometimes, it doesn’t work at all, sometimes it crashes and loses changes, sometimes some clips become unreadable for it and all in all it is more time-consuming than it would be anyway. I had to use many tricks to finish one video…
After that, it now was 11:30 instead of 10 or so (if everything would have worked well), I went to some bank offices (none of them takes IRR and none of them would hand out $ in cash) and they sent me to a money exchange, but they only later gave me $ after I went to another place with ATM to get dirham.
I continued my cutting “fight” with movie maker, also had a sleep in the afternoon and as a highlight of the day, I was invited to join the family for another of their nice and healthy meals, complemented by an Cashew-based vegan ice-cream as a dessert.
After that, Doron, Marvin and I tried several VoIP calls because of Doron’s birthday but ended by writing a few lines, Dubai blocks such activities for unknown reasons.

099 in Dubai Marina 27.10.2018

Again, Gray and I left shortly after 7:00 and made a high-speed ride to Marina. Gray is some years older than me and I hope to be similar fit then!
The Dubai Marina is a 7km long pedestrian zone around calm water with swanky yachts that cost some $ every hour for just bobbing around there, because the place costs more than 10000$ per year and meter length.

You can see what useless things mankind can do, building fancy houses for some (and leaving other people homeless),

Do you see the mosque? 3 brown skyscrapers are to be seen, too

so

watering the desert to have green grass

(and not giving access or even stealing water of the poor), but this happened all the time, from the pyramids to the churches in Europe and all the palaces around the world. And I can see the beauty but it makes me unhappy. Same here.
Gray showed me 40 brown skyscrapers around that place. They all were built at the same time and the locals could buy apartments for ~40.000€. Now, they rent them out for the same amount per year.
On the ground, you sometimes could find business cards of women who would come and help you if you have a stiff neck. Or so.

In the afternoon, with Phil’s help I tried to get rid of my IRR. Seems to be hard. Gray thought about Iranian tradesmen having small shops in some areas. In worst case, I send them to Nader.
I withdrew 100 dirham but made a mistake, I guess. I went again to that restaurant where Gray had had breakfast with me and I saw the (high enough) price of a nice dish but it was for a small size only and I had ordered a “bigger” one. So, half of the money was gone with one dish. Then I went to the supermarket, bought some bananas, a soja pudding and a chocolate for another 46dirham. But I will not need much more, still I have cookies, nuts, dried fruits and I want to finish them.
When Gray came home from his dragon boat race (the team was quite successful!), he started a cooking session on a same energetic level as cycling (or everything). My job was to keep the distance, so he can work on.
Elaine came 2 hours later from her long yoga teaching day and then we had dinner with Phil, who after that met with friends and three others went to sleep.

098 Dubai beach ride 26.10.2018

Gray is also an early bird, so we left around 7-something for a bike ride. We just closed the garden door, it is not necessary to lock anything, because Dubai is a very safe place. Partly, you can explain that by very clear regulations: if you have a problem with the law, you simply lose your permission to stay and no one wants to risk that. Our first stop was for breakfast in a restaurant nearby. Gray saw friends and they came to our table. They sell water filtering systems (and I can say that even after hours and not cooled down anymore, the water is still good to drink). After some nice food and nice talk, we left them, to go to and drive along the beach.
Gray showed me the club area of his dragon boat team

and a fish market.

The public beach is longer than I would have expected and all along is a running path and solar USB charging “flowers” with free wifi.

Help! This woman wants to push me in the water!!

In the afternoon, we made a second tour, but this time by car.
Gray knows a lot about the city and the different construction areas and some special buildings and now he was showing me the docks for the old traditional ships, the Dhaus. Repairing is protracted, complicated and handmade.

We went on to the place of a fitness event where Elaine offered 4 different Yoga classes on this and the next day.

You could see all variants of fitness activities but I had become sleepy in the car and combined with the afternoon heat, walking around was enough for me ?

As a next, Gray wanted to see the place where on Saturday would be the dragon boat race for him and his team.

On the further way, we made a stop at the port of the Dhaus in the Dubai creek, seeing what different kinds of loads they transport.

We went home through urban canyons between skyscrapers.

I would prefer if mankind would make more efforts to become reasonable, sustainable and human instead of building cities in inhospitable deserts or gaining land with enormous expenditures, giving people the illusion of immortality and infinity and a wrong idea of life and its essence. This is especially strange here, when you go along the beach and see women in bikini walking and women with face masks driving by in black clothes and black cars and the call for prayer comes from the other side of the street.
At home, Gray had some ideas how to fix my bike mirror and it worked!

He went out for dinner with me

and only shortly after coming home I started another night of deep sleep of nearly 8h.

097 to Dubai 25.10.2018

The night was hard enough because of the seats but additionally, there were 2-3 guys talking sometimes very loudly. First, I thought the tried to make conversation over several rows, but they were direct neighbours.

When I was in a struggle between exhaustion and curiosity about land in sight an officer approached me bringing the SPOT device. I wonder why he knew it was mine and what was the reason to take it off from the railing.
I got up to see what is going on outside and saw Daniel, Harry and the full moon.

After departure, Harry had told me that the ship had not reached full speed, you could see it by the “Heckse” that would turn white. Heckse is a German technical term for the foaming water at the “Heck” (Rear/back/stern) of a ship.

Now, I asked him if he is satisfied with the Heckse and Daniel misheard it and thought I was saying “Hexe” (Witch) and meaning Elisabeth, Harry’s wife…
I waited for sunrise but the haze and clouds didn’t allow a good one.

After a time, there were more and more ships to see, I interpreted that for soon arrival but it took until 11.

Near the port,

I turned on my phone and for 1-2min I had internet connection and could send a whatsapp to Elaine, then it was over, Irancell didn’t allow more, goodbye Irancell.
One hour after arrival, around 12, we could go off the ship.

before leaving the ferry: Daniel, Tomasz, Elisabeth, Harry, Martin

Harry and Elisabeth in their Landrover and Daniel and I should follow a police car to the office, I think this was a nice picture of a special convoy. There, inside we had to put the bikes on the side and go to passport control. First all women, then all men were checked, and all had to sit down again after that and continue waiting. Tomasz and I were the only ones who also had to undergo bodysearch and I guess my guardian angel in the ear is responsible for that. Then, we could go back to the bikes and send the bags through another x-ray. The officer regarded the bag with the tools as suspicious and I had to open it. There would have been enough things to care about but only a book-shaped bag of sweets was interesting for the officer and he wanted to open it, promising to close it again with tape. At 14h finally, Daniel, Tomasz and I said goodbye, Harry and Elisabeth had been ready even before us.
I was not totally ok with the route Mr.G suggested, but it was better than doing it on my own. After 25km I got the feeling that something is wrong: in my memory, I had mixed up 20min (according to Elaine that what a car needs without traffic) with 20km.

right to middle: traffic light (2-3min red), a building and the highest street lamp in the world

I had messaged Elaine that I would 1,5-2h but now I saw that it would be 38km, I would need much more time. When you know that you must go 40km it is easier than expecting 20 and then realizing it is double the way. And I was getting a bit weak, I only had had a small breakfast at 7 and some other bodily needs also became more and more perceptible.
After 38km, MrG stated that I had arrived at the given location in an industrial area and only then I realized that Elaine’s location on warmshowers that I had used for route-planning was not the same she had sent me to whatsapp. Now I was a bit desperate, because I didn’t want to say again that I am later than supposed, I was tired and exhausted, and I had difficulties to find my way without internet connection. I made an unnecessary detour and had to go back 2km but after 50km in total, I reached the place.
Elain’s son, Phil was at home and gave me a friendly welcome, I took a shower an felt much better when Elaine and Gray came back home.
I got delicious vegetarian (or was it even vegan?) food and then Gray offered me something that will keep me busy finding it locally grown somewhere: yellow Kiwi! There are some fruits that can remind me on Paradise if they are ripe and fresh and locally grown, green Kiwi can be good enough, but the yellow one is next level.
Elaine and Gray had to leave again for a gathering and I tried to write a bit but before 22:00 I fell asleep and slept stone-like until 6 in the morning.

096 to Bandar Abbas 24.10.2018

As a nervous person, I woke up early, because still I was more than 250km from the port where I should leave at 21h (and be there at 17h). So, my bags were packed soon. At 7:30, Majid started packing my bike in the car and with a lot of ropes, he achieved a stable construction.

At 7:50 we sat down for breakfast and at 8:20 the whole family was in the car – they had decided to take a day off to go with me to Bandar Abbas!
Majid is a fast driver, the kilometres were melting and I was glad that there was no reception most of the time, so he could concentrate on driving.
I was waiting to see camels but when Majid showed me some, it was on the other side, so, no photo (it would have been a bad one anyway).
We reached the city shortly after 11

but the city is big (the second biggest Austrian city, Graz has less than 300000 inhabitants, Bandar Abbas has >500000), it took 30min to get to a beach near the city center. The boys ran to the water, the family wanted to stay there for a while,

and I started to unleash my bike to drive to the office of Mohadeseh. On couchsurfing, she originally had offered me to stay in Bandar Abbas but at that time (and until a few days before), I had not expected to come there. Now, there was a chance to meet in person and talk a little in German as she had started learning that language.
Majid offered to bring me there and so here was a goodbye at the beach from Taha and Matin and Sedigheh who had cared so much for me and now had tears in her eyes.

And 10min later, a second goodbye with Majid with 3 kisses on the shoulders.

Then, I was alone after a week of family life, my last and in a way most intense week with one of those incredible families in Iran…
I took a deep breath to cope with this situation of goodbye and leaving. Then I contacted Mohadeseh, she came to bring me up to the office where her nice colleague and her boss greeted me, and we sat down in her room to talk for a while. She also had ordered lunch, 3 different kinds of this Iranian food I love. Her friend and co-worker joined as for some bits.

She most of the time was without headscarf, smoked some cigarettes and had 3 tattoos on her arm what is a bit surprising even at the end of my Iran-days full of “aha-experiences”
Mohadeseh was shy to use her German, I tried to talk in German but after a while we ended up in English.

We had 3h time and packed them with different topics, from culture to agriculture, but then I realized that I would have to do 15km to reach the port and that I was late. It was a nice meeting and maybe it was easier to go because of time pressure but it was another goodbye so short after getting to know.
On the street, I didn’t find the route to the port on Mr.G and in slight panic I tried to connect phone and Mr.G to get the route. An old beggar approached me, and I would have loved to give some money and tried to say to her she should wait until I am ready with my tools which were making me mad. But the guard of the office came and send her away. When I finally was ready, I saw her in the wrong direction.
On the way, a motorcyclist came near me, asking where I am come from. After my answer he said good bye and drove on. After a minute, he let me catch up for another piece of conversation. He did it four times, always asking 1-2 question and the driving away! Then he asked me for my number and while driving saved my contact. Then he went on. After a while, he was here again, because something was wrong with the number. Then it was done, and I could concentrate on traffic, To add to my tension, Mr.G made a little detour with me and it was getting dark. My front light did always work only for 3-5min although I was going at least 20km/h all the time. But at 17:30, I reached the port. The use of being there so early (What minutes before I had considered as late)? Waiting…
First, I wanted to get confirmed that there is no problem with my Bandar Lengeh-ticket in Bandar Abbas and there was no.

A bit more relaxed, I went to the waiting area, looking for a good place to “park” my bike when someone called my name. It was Daniel, (day 078) sitting to another foreigner, Tomasz from Poland and a couple from Linz (Austria). We had not met in Shiraz, what would have been easy and as we had agreed and now we met in Bandar Abbas, because his and my plans had (been) changed.
Before sitting down next to them, I wanted to get something sweet. I regretted to be in a hurry and not buying something in a confectionary (I like them!) and there was a little kiosk selling tea and some small things to eat. In my wallet, I had some notes summing up to ~50000 and one 500000. I chose two small cakes and after shortly hesitating the shop keeper was ok with the small notes.
We “foreigners” sat together for a while, exchanging news and experiences. Daniel wants to get to Oman without any detailed plans and also Elisabeth and Harry were on their way to Oman with their self-customized old Landrover.
And then, around 18h, some movement around the passengers started. So, we also queued up. But then an officer took Daniel and me with our bikes aside and said we should wait there. And there we were standing for the next 1,5h, all the other passengers should pass before us.
In the end it is not so important where you wait, inside or outside.
Finally, we came to the x-ray which means to put all the bags down and after that put the bags back into their places to continue to the passport control. There some men wanted to enter the line in front of us, but Daniel told them to queue up at the end of the line. I don’t know if this is right or wrong, but I liked the situation with a German putting through what he regards as one of the basic universal rules and some Iranians perplexed by that but going to the end of the line and even telling some others that they should do the same, because of the tourists. (I guess, because I only could understand the word tourist and saw people going to the end of the row.)
After passport control, there was another x-ray, so again the bags had to be disassembled and then put back. After that, there was the next waiting area, but not for long this time and Daniel and I were in the middle part of passengers going to the ship. Someone showed us a place at the side of the ship to put the bikes and said we should leave the bags there, so we just grabbed a few things and went up to the passenger’s room. We had tickets with seat numbers but should just go to the back side (men’s side) and everyone chose a row of 3-4 seats for himself
First was tea time and you could see how important this was for most of the people! At 21:00 the ship didn’t move, but dinner was served. I didn’t try to eat extra fast but even if I would have, the Iranians were faster.
Around 23:00, the last trucks and the one car of Harry and Elisabeth were on board and the ferry took off. I wrote some good-bye messages before I would lose connection and then fixed my SPOT GPS railing to get some marked spots on my travelling map.
I was tired enough to try sleeping but the seats made this a bit difficult.

095 still Lar, never Bandar Lengeh 23.10.2018

In the morning I prepared a route to several bookstores (I only had found one, Nader helped me from Mashad with more addresses), because I wanted to find something for Taha (and Matin?) to get into English and/or to buy some funny t-shirts for both or something else for the family. So, I explained that I later in the morning would like to go out, but Majid told me that Sedigheh would go with me by car if I need anything….
We found a compromise, Sedigheh had to go shopping anyway, (in a confectionary, she bought some nuts and so and only later i knew the reason – she made Raginak for me, another present!)

creative names for chocolate (Spanish? Portugese??)

and she would bring me to the bookstores and I would be allowed to pay.

the castle and the ruins by daylight

Four stores were more paper shops with some books and if English then for adults, the 5th was for kids but it had only schoolbooks for English, nothing for playfully learning and only the last shop had something in the right direction. I took a small selection and we went on to get Matin from pre-school. On the way, I found a message from Nazanin from the Iran Travelling Center: The departure from Bandar Lengeh is cancelled due to bad weather conditions. I could take the next ferry on Saturday (too late for my freighter from Dubai to Malaysia) or go to Bandar Abbas to reach the ferry from there to Sharjah (Near Dubai). This was the only option, so I asked Nazanin to organize a transfer between the two ports for me and my bike as I still was in Lar, depending on Majid to bring me to Bandar Lengeh this noon. When we were at home with Matin,

some sleep during the lessons, Matin fell asleep after schoop

everything was planned and partly organized. At 14:00 Majid arrived at home and I told him about the situation and he had a new plan:
He would bring me to Bandar Abbas directly tomorrow morning instead today to Bandar Lengeh. He called Nazanin and cancelled the transfer and we had lunch together,

still the last lunch, but I brought my packed bags back in the room to stay another night.
After lunch, I was tired, many things besides this endless ferry story bothered me (China Visa, the freighter from China to Sydney, organizing meeting with my Dubai hosts under the new conditions of arriving a day later and at 5 a.m. instead of 2 p.m., the cancellation of the freighter from Singapore to Dunkerque…) and I tried to clarify at least parts of that. I this respect, I could take good advantage of this unexpected additional Lar afternoon…

After an ice-cream we left for picnic in a park. Before that, it was a lot of driving for shopping that confused me about directions and location. In the end, we were at a park near home and ate roasted sheep meet with special Lar-yoghurt that is so thick that it comes near to crème cheese. This time, both parents talked to me about their Canadian dream and I was again a destroyer….

094 Lar musical evening 22.10.18

The night was short again, I could not fall asleep although I was tired. The hallucinations were more pleasant than yesterday but still disturbing and the Azan (call for prayer) did a better job than necessary at 4 a.m.. Yesterday it was also little sleep but the whole day I was not sleepy, today I was.
Early in the morning, I began to look for all the papers and documents I need for the freighter. The have attracting names like letter of indemnity and it is a long list. Some I had in my dropbox, some I could find in the emails to and from “Langsam reisen”, some via link of this company and finally I had the whole collection.

Majid had shown me “the way” to a print shop and the barber (I have IRR left and a beard to cut), one is 2 houses to the right, the other is on the opposite side of the street. Let’s say: easy to find.
So, I was surprised when Sedigheh came to accompany me. Her English ends where my Farsi ends, so this would not count. It was easy to find out – I had no chance to pay, well she also could not, the shop keeper didn’t accept any payment, not her card and not my money.
We left the printshop (I with a lot of paper) to the barber. On the way, I tried to say that my beard would call for my money but Sedigheh entered the shop first and paid in advance. She said she would go (most of the time when I say “say” it is either sign language or talking in a language the other one doesn’t understand), but for a while I saw her waiting in front of the shop. The barber had a special seat for very young customers, a seat in car design with buttons to press to give sounds. A father and the barber did there best to keep a small boy happy while the barber cut his hair. They did a great job, only the last minute some tears flowed and in the and the boy seemed to be satisfied. I got a kind of remake of the design Naser had given to my hair and left. Sedigheh seemed to be gone home and I thought that this could be my chance to spend some money (I would not get much for it when I change it and here most of the things are cheap, at least cheaper than I thought as the next example shows.
I went again to the Bazar and found a shop with some electronic devises and asked for a SD card reader. The shopkeeper had one. Even in Austria I would not know exactly what it could cost and in Iran with the rapidly sinking value of IRR to $ I roughly expected a price around 2-300000 and was not surprised when I was told “6!”. So, I offered a 500.000 and a 100.000 and the shop keeper took only 100.000 and gave me back 40.000. That means I would have paid 10x the price without problem and the shop keeper helped me to get it right.
I went on to the confectionary to buy some chocolate against my craving and some for the family as I expected that they would not open the box. On the way, the man who was the next after me at the barber came to me and said, “woman waiting you!” I showed that I am sorry, and that I will be back in 15min. In the shop, they knew me from yesterday and were very helpful again. The next, I wanted to buy was some tasty juices for the family and they showed me the way. I was near to that place but met Sedigheh on the way who took my back in direction home. I explained via translator what I wanted to do and so we went to a fruit shop near the house and she bought lots of fruits. At home, I got a fresh made carrot juice instead of me bringing something for the family. Again failed…
This afternoon, I fell asleep for a while. When I opened the door, Majid and Sedgheh came in, she had a box and he explained that she had a present for me. In the box was a little box and in it the landscape of Iran plated in silver….

Maybe you can guess my mixed feelings.
The evening continued with two shows:
Matin showed what he does in Gymnastics (before that, Taha had been coming home in martial arts uniform) and then, Majid had suggested that a friend could bring a guitar so that I would still have a rest but would not feel bored.
Let us say it was one friend but with his son and another friend. And let us say the friend’s son brought his guitar but the father with a little help of his friend brought also a Ney (flute, played by pressing it to the inner upper lip!), a (Se)tar and an Iranian and an Arab drum (Zarb and Timpou).
But first, Saeed played an Iranian melody on his guitar. He played musically and very fluent and so I completely misjudged the time he learns – it is not 2-3y, he only practised since 3-4months!
His father then played on all the other instruments and sang and accompanied himself with both drums. It was great to hear that and a nice gathering of the complete family with those friends!
