302 Ship 04 18.5.2019

Although I had been awake until the ship had been finally arriving at 1 a.m., I couldn’t sleep longer than until 5 a.m.  So, there will be a lack of energy and motivation accompanying me through this day. First symptom: no Feldenkrais lesson before breakfast  but a lot of facebook scrolling, but with a good reason or explanation: The vice-chancellor of Austria, Strache in 2017 (before elections) had been filmed offering influence on the most-read newspaper in Austria, because he himself wants to have more influence on the media. There were more bad things to see in that video, but I could not stand it, I just read reactions to that topic and ask myself what will come now. Strache is only a symbol, at the one hand for bad politicians but also for his devoted followers. Most of them are predisposed to simple right-wing messages and resistant for anything else, what they then call fake news or extreme left. If you take away Strache (or before him Haider) they will find someone else. Nothing of global relevance is important to them except it is linked to the only topics that matter to them, like nationalism or Muslim immigration. Those are fueled and driven by outrage, mistrust, hatred and the feeling of injustice (but only against themselves). It is such a waste of energy, time and manpower, that we would need to change everything that really matters. By the way, if we finally would start to do the right things (fight global warming, fight global injustice, poverty and hunger, built up a fair and sustainable society of ONE mankind, because we live together on this one globe), immigration would be only a marginal phenomenon not a threat.
Today I found out that I can not only upload my youtube clips unlisted and later make them public myself, I can plan the date of publishing. This is good, because now I want to edit and upload as many videos as I can, but only publish them one per day.
and now some cargo loading photos. I saw a bit more than on my last two trips, for example that on upper deck level, they put big panels after filling up the belly of the ship with 10 layers of containers.

exactly at the empty spot, I arrived in Australia on CMA CGM Georgia

301 Ship 03 17.5.2019

This morning, I woke up even earlier and made another Feldenkrais lesson, but it was exhausting, because I had to sit 30min in an uncomfortable pose and I only should imagine the movements, what is good and effective but hard to do for so long time, the more if sitting starts to hurt. I am warned and will not repeat this lesson too soon!
At the moment, it is easy not to eat too much, because I am not hungry at all. We’ll see if this is enough to lose some weight. I know that it is not urgent in any way, but first, I don’t want to miss the point when I gain unnecessary “reserves” and second I want to deal with this problem that is a real problem for so many people (at least more than for me).
I went to the bridge, because the ship was swinging stronger than I had experienced before and the officer explained that it is about 3-4°. I wondered that the sea seemed to be qualm and still there is this movement and he showed me something he called swell, some bigger and slower waves that move the ship although the sea is not rough. He showed me an instrument to measure the movement to the left and right. When the movement gets up to 10° (he told me, that on the way to Sydney they had such), you should not use the lift anymore and when it is 15°, they start to be concerned. But danger starts around 30°. I cannot imagine this, because also today things fell from the desk and when I did my running training on the tread mill, I alternately ran uphill and downhill – and had to strain harder and to slow down every few seconds.
A few hours later, I came again to the bridge, because I had seen that the ship didn’t move anymore. At noon we were in front of Melbourne, but instead of going long-side at 1800 we would have to wait for the pilot until 2200 and would not arrive before midnight, again because of lack of space in the port.
The next thing I learned today was that only in Singapore they would get new supplies. They haven’t any muesli or better bread onboard and I think about buying it in Fremantle when I wanted to leave the ship for a while anyway.
I asked my travel agent in Berlin, if it would be possible to care for healthy stuff on the last ship (Benjamin Franklin, from Singapore to Duncerque) and I also asked where I could address my concern about the terrible food-waste on all the ships. The problem is that at least the officers get their meals served and many of them eat just a little bit, the rest is thrown away. If they could take it by themselves or could decide how much they want to get on their plate, it would be better. And it is interesting that the company looks so much on the prices, that maybe differ in a range from 10-30% depending on what and where you buy, but in the end more than what they save by buying cheaper is wasted and this is not only a waste of their money it is also a waste of global resources.

Tomorrow, the Sri Lankan Buddhists (70% of the population) celebrates Buddhas birthday and they B-Deck is decorates.

I had asked the chief officer for a magnet, so I can pin a note on the door when I am outside, because it had happened that someone locked the door when I was on deck. And he just teared down one decoration to give me the clip magnet that held it.

300 Ship 02 16.5.2019

Yes, day 300…
I used my too early awakening for catch up yesterday’s Feldenkrais session before breakfast. In my luggage, I had found another chocolate from Taiwan that was totally mouldy, and I brought it down to the kitchen where they have a place for waste separation. The Bosun took the disgusting completely mouldy chunk out of the box with bare hands, which was at least surprising. But the next thing he wanted to do without washing his hands after this action, was giving toast bread for me in the toaster. He is a nice guy, but I would prefer to take my own bread with my own fingers in general and in such a situation in particular.
I will survive.
Today, I got a ship-email-address, but until Freemantle or even a bit more northward, I will have connection from time to time, because we are sometimes near the coast (ok, even at the coast, you don’t have connection all the time, it must be near a town) and we will have stops in Melbourne, Adelaide and Fremantle (named after Captain Charles Fremantle, who established a camp there in 1829. Sometimes called Freo and in an area called Walyallup (in Nyungar, a language with only a few individuals still able to use its full resources)).
At the gym, I had started my running program yesterday and wanted to cycle today, but the batteries are gone, so my complicated system of increasing tempo and duration is difficult to monitor. But I found a personal scale, stepped on it and saw something like 5kg over my original weight before leaving Vienna. This is more than I can lose during cycling those 1400km back home and no wonder after being so lazy the last weeks and eating lots, especially chocolate. Since I entered the ship, I hadn’t eaten any chocolate, but still always a lot. This lunch, I wanted to eat less, but the bosun brought an extra plate with rice and I feared he would throw the rest if it seems too little to keep it, so I again ate more than I needed and even 4 hours later felt very full (2 hours before dinner…) But I will try to eat less from now on and maybe in combination with some exercise I can get rid of 1 kg on during this trip, 1-2 until reaching France and the rest until being back in Vienna. Normally, I have a tolerance of 1-2kg, before eating less chocolate and other sweet stuff and when it is 3+, I become stricter, but in general, I still eat when I am hungry. Now I would try to reduce in general, but mainly in the evening, (like at home, when I normally don’t eat after lunch) and in the morning, I want to skip the less healthy stuff, like white bread, jam, Nutella, crepes.
I asked for a smaller portion for dinner, not sure if it was, and although I was not hungry, I easily could eat all of it, because of the taste.
Then, I went to the “Owner’s recreation room” (Btw, I live in the “Owner’s room”, but it is less comfortable than the passenger’s rooms on the previous ships, maybe because this ship is some years older and smaller than those?) to see what books they have. There are some French, Russian, English and even German books, but they are not appealing for me, luckily I could say, because then I don’t need to read one of them and lose my precious working time or training time – strange thoughts…

299 Ship 01 15.5.2019

The night was loud and rumbling, because they emptied the space in front of me completely and filled it with other containers, but it was not too bad for me.

At breakfast, I could take crêpes with Nutella and only a bad muesli without oats was available and no full grain bread, what I had hoped to get for a healthy diet, but still there is a lot of salad at noon and for dinner, so it will be good.
I read about Nutella and there was one argument that you can think about: you cannot tell for sure that the palm oil they use, is not causing overexploitation, although they have a certificate that the WWF accepts. But for sure they would need at least 3x more space for growing alternative oils and then the problem could be even bigger. I wrote an email to the producing company, Ferrero, and suggest going a step ahead and use organic ingredients, so not only I, but many customers would feel better to buy that spread. Maybe, they were waiting for my letter and will change this soon!
In the morning, I wanted to do a Feldenkrais lesson, but was 2x interrupted by a guy who wanted to have my documents. I stopped it, and avoided to be interrupted two more times, because he wanted to have my passport again for a copy. But he gave it back to me, so maybe I will take the chance to leave the ship in Fremantle for a short round there (and buying oat flakes?!)
Today, I only cut two videos, because the first one was longer, and I tried to download new music from youtube. I also wasted some time by listening hit-music of the 70ties-90ties, because in the stadium in Sydney they had played a song that I had heard before but didn’t know the name of it or the band and I want to use it for the next open air concert in my school. I heard a lot of songs from Toto, Yes, Foreigners and all those bands suspicious for me, but didn’t find that song.
At dinner, the captain invited me to the bridge when we would leave. I had seen a woman on board yesterday and now it was clear that she is the wife of the captain, because she sat beside him and they were not talking like colleagues. The pilot came at 18:30 and the ship left the port. From time to time he said a number or something like for instance “midship”, and in the same second, 3 crewmembers repeated that one after the other as a confirmation.

The tug-boats stayed with us for a while after pulling the ship about 10m from the harbour wall. And then, the pilot also left us. I wrote a last message to M&M before my phone lost the connection and sat down for finishing the second video. But because of the vibrations of the ship, caused by the engine, the screen began to shiver. I hope this problem will not become more serious and I can finish some videos. If I can complete 3 of them every day, I would have done all the videos until leaving Sydney, and only if I film too much on board, I will again built up a delay. But there are not too many new things for filming, so I will see!

298 Sydney departure 14.5.2019

I should be used to culminating delays, but the more you hope the harder to be realistic…
Yesterday, the agent had told me that berthing should be at 1400 (“fourteen hundred”) and he would tell me more at 1000. He messaged me at 715 (or is this 725? It was a quarter after 700) and I thought, now I must speed up to be faster at the port, but it was the opposite. It should be 1800! For M&M this meant that saying goodbye would be in the middle of afternoon instead of in their lunch break. For me, it meant nearly another complete workday, only from time to time interrupted by packing one bag after the other. Later, in the morning, the agent told me, the ship would berth earlier and so, I should come at 1700. So, M&M came at 1500, my bike was ready to go, we talked a bit and when the situation became a bit awkward, because we knew we must say goodbye in the end, we just did it.
For me, this was a big moment in many ways, but something important made it easier – M&M will come to Europe in a few months.

Australia, to be more exact: Sydney and to be even more exact: M&M had been the goal of that trip, all the time it gave me extra motivation to complete the trip according to my idea to get to them only by bike & ship. Then I arrived and in a way the tour was finished, in reality of course not.
But there was no time to dedicate to philosophical pondering, because soon, Doron arrived and we had this great camping trip, served on a silver tray, I just had to enjoy it without wasting any thought on where to go next, what to see, where to sleep, not even what to eat. After this trip, there were some days left together with Doron and then another 12 days of jauntiness. I could stay like a family member, with no special responsibilities, only enjoying my time and our time (M&M had to their jobs…). Because of those many days that I was staying, a little bit, I felt like an intruder but then M&M said two things that confused and touched me:
Markus said they were thinking about an au-pair and even when this was more meant for fun, it tells something positive. And later Martina said that it will be strange when I will not be around anymore.
Thank you, also for that…
I drove to the port and it was a relaxed ride, because I knew the way (see day 291) and came there at 16:30. At the barrier of gate B34, I didn’t know what to do, because nobody seemed to see me, so I drove in like the other trucks. Now they saw me, and 5 horrified security ran to me and asked me what I did there. I could calm them down and they showed me a place to wait. After a few minutes, a bus from The Mission to Seafarers (>>Volunteer Ship Visitors board commercial ships in ports to offer help and support to individual seafarers and crews.<<) arrived. The driver chatted with me for a while and explained that he and others fetch and bring crew members to town and back. While we were talking, the agent also arrived and told me that the ship will stay in the port until next evening !
Well, at least, I could board. The Puccini is a smaller than the other ships, but the structure is similar. The security officer immediately wanted to make a tour on the ship and show me the live boats etc. Happily, I had heard most of that before, because it was quite fast to remember. It was interesting that again I also heard something new. Then the cadet came to show and bring me to the mess room for dinner. The last thing was the immigration procedure, then I was alone and could start to adopt to the meditative and regular life on the ship.

297 Sydney last workday 13.5.2019

If everything would have worked well, I would have boarded “Puccini” today, maybe it will be tomorrow noon, but crucial will be the departure, I hope the delay will not destroy the Singapore schedule.
So I had another workday, this time parallel with Martina who today worked at home, too. I made a last shopping tour to get some Australian cashews. I didn’t find any, all of them were from Vietnam (where I luckily had bought a kilo, see day 176), so I bought peanuts. I will not need them before July and maybe I get some locally grown nuts in Malaysia or later in Europe.
In the evening, we (mainly Martina) made a reading of my 50-birth-book that Marvin and Doron had made for me. Again, I was touched by their big efforts and labour to compile and write all those texts! M&M and I had some fun and could dug in our memories.

296 Sydney last Sunday 12.5.2019

In the morning, I put my SIM card in my “spare part-phone” and then it worked, and I could do the booking for the bus. M&M had a painting session (and I didn’t participate because I didn’t want to get white color on either of my few clothes). Then we went for a last Sunday walk to the Headland Park. At Middle Head, you find fortifications from late 19th century and later and of course they offer a good over the harbour area that they were meant to protect.

When you walk on, in  the Sydney Harbour National Park, you find more of those buildings, some with murals.

We arrived at Chowder Bay, that is important for M&M for diving, you could feel their excitement.

On the way to Taronga Zoo you again have a great view, always Harbour bridge & Opera in sight and the same on the ferry back to “The Rocks”.

On the train back to Redfern, we discussed the strategy for preparing dinner and 20min later put it into practise, with good results.
At night we made a Mother’s Day call and Markus turned on the heating – no, not for more human luxury – for the paint to dry better, but in this house also get their share, because doors are not shutting too tightly.

293-295 Sydney 9.-11.5.2019

293 Sydney Goodbye Evening Efan 9.5.2019

The morning was dedicated to working, maybe my blog will finally be up to date when I leave, and then again summing up an even bigger delay of 20 or more days, because, first I am on the ship and then there might be intense and busy days in Singapore and Malaysia, most probably without posting anything, before I finally board the last ship for even longer (24 days!) and then start my 1400km home-run from France to Vienna.
Efan and I met for a good-bye evening. We also talked about the Uganda project and Efan has a lot of helpful ideas, thoughts and hints. But first, she had the spontaneous idea to go shopping together because she had chosen a winter coat online and wanted to see and try it in reality.

I am not a specialist in fashion, so I am also not good in accelerating the corresponding decision-making processes, so it was good that Efan knew what she wanted. In the end she knew what she didn’t want and that was this coat, so she left the shop richer than expected but insofar un-coated.
We had a great chocolate dessert and then walked home and for me this was like a count-down to another of these good-byes for long or for ever that accompany this trip or – in a way – the journey of our life.
Of course, you can stay in contact even with 20000km in between, now much easier than in older times but I prefer to have the possibility to have my friends around me…

294 Sydney football 10.5.2019

In the morning, I worked with windows in two ways, on my PC and with those M&M had got the day before. There were holes that needed to be filled with wood filler before you can polish the frames before you can paint them.

In the evening, we met Jack, a former colleague of Martina to go to the Stadium to watch a match of Australian football, a unique mixture, but near to American or also Gaelic football and even the aboriginal Marn Grook and envented 1858 by Thomas Wills. I put on all my available clothes and without wind it was only a bit cold for me, with wind it was freezing. Most of the natives were wearing much less but I saw some of them also feeling cold.

The match was a confusing mixture of running, pushing around, falling + others jumping on that one, called kick, hand pass, tackle, mark and contests.

Sometimes you could see how well they performed with the ball, sometimes I wondered why they couldn’t find the goal when shooting in a situation where I guessed everyone should get a goal.

The play 4x20min, but you actually don’t know when it is over, because they stop the time for every interruption, so in fact it is about 30min. The last quarter was most exciting, because Sydney was ahead, but within a few minutes that can turn completely and you could see that both teams gave their best to win (and Sydney won).

It was great to see the fans of both teams going peaceful, relaxed and laughing when I compare that to the always at least potentially violent atmosphere in Vienna (but as far as I know also elsewhere)

295 Sydney windows 11.5.2019

Again, we had a start of the days with breakfast outside and buying some food. I feared or even expected that Lulu & Mick + Hugo again would not come to Redfern (it was scheduled to last Saturday) but I decided to bake a cake anyway, because it is not too hard to eat it for us three. So, I was not surprised, when I got the cancel-email during baking and we knew that we now would proceed with working on the windows. The biggest task was to get one big window/door to the upper floor. First, we took a break with coffee and cake and then we prepared a lot with ropes and blankets for protecting the wooden frame, but in the end, it was easier than expected. Later, I tried to get a bus ticket from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, but this was harder than the window-maneuver, mainly because my phone again didn’t get access to the Australian net and the booking site demanded this and other things that didn’t work.

290-292 Sydney 6.-8.5.2019

290 another Sydney workday 6.5.2019 no photos, nothing special (this is not negative!)

291  Sydney shopping and research 7.5.2019

In the later morning, I went to the port, first to see the way (in case Mr.G wants to confuse me) and second to see the port itself to see where I might have to go for boarding next Monday. On the way back, I made a stop at a kind of alcohol supermarket to get a present for M&M who like to taste gin sometimes.

292 Sydney Kieser 8.5.2019 checked

The morning was another Sydney workday, mainly trying to catch up with my blog. Then I went to the Kieser center in Pymble. It was originally 20km, but Mr.G was very creative in inventing detours: You follow the route and suddenly he shouts, “wrong way!” And then, you don’t know what he shows you on the display. It can be the original route and you easily can find back to it. It can be his suggestion how to find back to the route, also a good way. But sometimes he wants to share his confusion and only shows  a way to find back to the point when you left his route. That can be annoying, but when you have an idea where you really want to go, you later can find back to the original route and celebrate reunion with Mr.G. But sometimes, mainly in a city, first, he might see a wrong way where is none, but second, he makes a new route for sending you back somewhere and you don’t even see that it is new and what he wants, and if you follow his suggestions, you come back to a point where you had been before but there is a big chance that you will face the same problem in the same position again and you can do some circles if you want. Or you stop the tour, start the routing again and hope it will be better….
By that and because I took some photos, the way to Pymble was 2 hours. The instructors were very friendly and for the first time since July 2018, I made some Kieser exercises. Of course, it was hard and frustrating, but I will recover in upcoming July! We made some photos and I went home again, this time a little bit faster, because I took less photos and when Mr.G became extravagant, I just followed the street signs.

At home, I tried to make “Semmelknödel” (bread dumplings) but besides I had not found the proper dried bread (rolls), I also didn’t find the perfect balance of the ingredients and the dumplings were too soft. Later, we watched a movie (M&M get sent a random movie every week, this time it was “avengers: Infinity war”, a film where it might be better to know some of the templates, but in a way it was funny for me, too) and late at night, I finished another diary entry.

287-289 workday and star gazing weekend3.-5-5-2019

287 Sydney workday 3.5.2019 – no photos

Today, I wanted to meet Efan to take a look at her bike, but it was raining heavily for hours, so I continued working and writing messages with the exception of a short walk in early evening to bring Doron’s postcards to the post-office. At least I could finish some things!

288 Sydney weekend 4.5.2019

M&M went for Yoga in the morning, and after that we had breakfast outside and went to the carriageworks farmers market, were you can get (organic) food of the region, but “region” is something also 400km away…

We completed our shopping at Harris, the supermarket specialized on regional fruits and vegetables and went home.
In the later afternoon, we had an early dinner and packed the camping stuff in the car to go to the blue mountains for star gazing. But when we were bout to leave, Markus saw that again a tyre was flat!

He changed the wheel and only 20min later than planned, we could pick up Efan, who had brought up the idea of meteor shower gazing. We went to the Perrys Lookdown Campground (End of Govetts Leap Road, Blackheath NSW 2785) that was pretty occupied, but we found a space for the tent and the car. Martina cooked a mulled wine to warm up, because at night at 1000m height in Mai it has 8-10°C.

We went “to bed” to wait for 3a.m. when there should be the most shooting stars to see. Efan and I talked for a while and late at night a group of students came and started a late-night dinner. They didn’t care too much for all those people sleeping in tents and cars and were very loud. We got up, went to the Dockers Lookout and pointed our noses towards the sky. It was cold and sometimes the wind blew but we stayed there until 4-something.

289 meteors and waterfalls 5.5.2019 checked

A bit freezing, we slept a few hours and then went to Blackheath for breakfast. In the later morning we made shorter walks around Katoomba, to the “3 sisters” and to the Wentworth falls before we went back to Sydney.

Markus made a great dinner with Kangaroo meat and vegetables from the carriageworks farmers market and as a dessert we had a poppy seed cake.
